Lobachevski Nikolai Ivanovich (1792-1856) is Russian mathematician, founder of non. Euclidean geometry, people’s educator.
In 1811 he graduated from Kazan University and worked here. In 1827-1948 he was rector at this University and taught mathematics, physics, astronomy. Lobachevski’s work “Brief comment on foundations of geometry” is the first work in the world devoted to non Euclidean geometry. The Lobachevski geometry created by him sharply differs from Euclidean geometry. His contemporaries did not understand his scientific ideas. The work “On foundations of geometry” represented by the scientific Board of the University got negative opinion at the Academy of Sciences by M.V. Ostrogradski. In spite of this fact, Lobachevski has not stopped his studies on geometry and in 1840 his work “Geometrical studies” was published in Germany.
Lobachevski has worked out a new method for approximate solution of algebraic equation, gave some theorems on trigonometric series in mathematical analysis and precised the notion of continuous function and other notions. His statue was set up in Kazan city.
