On February 25, 2019 at the Institute of Mathematics and Mechanics of ANAS an event was held on the occasion of the 26th February – the commemorative day of the Khojaly genocide. The event was attended by well-known military newscaster of Azerbaijan, singer of military patriotic songs, chairman of Public Union “Support to patriotic propaganda” – Shamistan Alizamani.
Opening the event, Director of the IMM Correspondent Member of ANAS Professor Misir Mardanov expressed his gratitude to Shamistan Alizamanli for the acceptance of the invitation and gave him speech. He noted that the Khojaly genocide is a genocide against ethnic Azerbaijanis during the occupation of Khojaly by the Armenian armed forces on the night of February 25-26 with the participation of the Russian 366th motocross regiment. After the occupation of Khojaly by Armenian groups, the civilians who remained there were deported. These actions were organized in an organized manner.
As a result of the Khojaly genocide 613 residents of Khojaly including 63 children, 106 women, 70 old persons were killed, 8 families were completely destroyed, 25 children lost both parents and 130 one of the parents. 487 people were injured, including 76 children. 1275 were taken captive. The fate of 150 people, including 68 women and 26 children, is still unknown.
The coverage of Khojaly genocide in Azerbaijan is mainly associated with the name of the National Hero of Azerbaijan Chingiz Mustafayev. His most important service in his short-term military journalism career was to film the atrocities committed in Khojaly. Seven Azerbaijani national heroes participated in the Khojaly defense. Shokhrat Hasanov was killed in the battles and after his death he was awarded the medal “For Courage” by the President of Azerbaijan. Allahverdi Bagirov, the National Hero of Azerbaijan, rescued 1003 Khojaly captives in three days.
At present recognition of Khojaly genocide is defined as one of the main directions of Azerbaijan’s foreign policy. Apart from Azerbaijan, Khojaly is fully recognized by Pakistan and Sudan as massacres. Mexico, Colombia, the Czech Republic, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Djibouti, Peru, Honduras, Panama, Jordan, Romania and Scotland know this tragedy as massacres at the parliamentary level. So far, 22 states of the USA have adopted a document recognizing Khojaly as the murder. This event is remembered in Azerbaijan as “Khojaly genocide” and “Khojaly tragedy”, and “Khojaly genocide” in other countries.
At the end, chairman of the Trade Union of IMM, associate professor Irada Mirzazade expressed gratitude to the chairman of Public Union “Support to patriotic propaganda” – Shamistan Alizamanli.
