– Who is Abbasgulu Aga Bakikhanov?
– He was born in 1794 in the village of Hila (now Amirjan), near Baku. He is the son of Baku khan Mirza Mammadov II. His father was the khan of Baku in 1784-1791. He knew Persian and Arabic languages, classical literature, and theology.
After his good career in Russian, he entered the military unit of the Caucasian Corps (1820), and he was promoted to the office of the headquarters on the Oriental languages (1822) and the Russian Army to the rank of Colonel (1842). In 1826-1829 he participated in the Russian-Iranian peace negotiations in Turkmenchay in the wars of Russia with Iran and Turkey. Gulistani-Iram (1841), written in Persian language, played a great role in the development of Azerbaijani historiography. The work covers the period of history of Azerbaijan and Dagestan from ancient novels to 1813. Gulustani-Irem gives information on Caucasian Albania, Babak Movement, Shirvanshahs’ State, Mongolian Attacks, Garagoyunlu and Aggoyunlu States, Azerbaijan Khanates, their Accession to Russia and so on. information.
