The weekly Wednesday seminar on May 8, 2024, 10.00 a.m., will present a report of the head of the “Department of Function Theory” Vugar Elman oglu Ismailov. Topic: “Some problems in approximation theory of ridge functions”.

Ridge functions appear in various fields and under various guises. They appear in partial differential equations (where they are called plane waves), in computerized tomography, and in statistics. Ridge functions are also the underpinnings of many central models in neural network theory. In the talk, various approximation theoretic properties of ridge functions will be described. The talk will also describe properties of generalized ridge functions, and their relation to linear superpositions and Kolmogorov’s famous superposition theorem.
