Today, in connection with the 30th anniversary of the Khojaly genocide, a commemorative event dedicated to the memory of the victims of the tragedy was held at the Institute of Mathematics and Mechanics of ANAS, organized by the chairman of the Trade Union Committee, associate professor Irada Mirzazade.
First, the participants commemorated the victims of the Khojaly genocide with a minute of silence.
Opening the event, Director General of the Institute of Mathematics and Mechanics of ANAS, Corresponding Member of the Academy, Professor Misir Mardanov spoke about the purposeful work carried out by the country’s leadership to return our lost and occupied lands and punish the perpetrators of the Khojaly genocide within international law. He added that the inclusion of the Azerbaijani army under the leadership of Supreme Commander-in-Chief Ilham Aliyev among the 50 strongest armies in the world is an indication of the high level of military potential of our country. According to him, the victims of Khojaly were avenged against the background of the 44-day war and the liberation of our lands. Professor Misir Mardanov stressed that despite the fact that 30 years have passed since the tragedy, there is an incurable wound in the memory of our people today.
The event was attended by Major Murad Shirinov, who was awarded the “Brave Warrder” medal, the medals for the liberation of Jabrayil, Khojavend, Fizuli regions, Rustam Ahmadli, who took part in the battles for Tartar, Agdara, Sugovushan and Aliyev Elvin, a participant in the April 2016 victory of the Azerbaijani army. In their speeches, they stressed that the world community was once again convinced that the strength of the Azerbaijani soldier is both the modern weapons in use and the soldiers’ mastery of the operational characteristics of these weapons at a high level. In particular, each member of our army, who showed great self-sacrifice in battles, carried out the task assigned to him with great enthusiasm and pride, carrying the name of the Azerbaijani soldier on the battlefield, our tricolor flag with honor and pride. One of the weapons of the Azerbaijani soldier aimed at the enemy was the love of the Motherland, and the power of this love is greater than the most modern weapon.
It should be noted that on the night of February 25-26, 1992, the Armenian armed forces, in gross violation of the norms and principles of international law, attacked the city of Khojaly with the participation of the 366th Regiment of the former Soviet army in Khankendi and brutally killed civilians. . During the Khojaly genocide, 613 people, including 106 women, 63 children and 70 elderly people, were killed with unimaginable brutality because they were Azerbaijanis, 487 civilians were seriously injured and 1,275 people were taken hostage.
The Khojaly massacre was part of Armenia’s planned policy of ethnic cleansing and aggression against Azerbaijan for many years. The then political and military leadership of Armenia was responsible for the genocide.
