The outstanding scientist of Azerbaijan decorated with “Glory” order, Honoured Science Worker, Vice-President of NAS of Azerbaijan, academic-secretary of Physical-Mathematical and Technical Sciences department, academician Akif Djafar oglu Gadjiev passed away on February 3, 2014 at his 78 years.

Akif Gadjiev was born on December 8, 1937 in Baku in the family of the famous specialist in study of literature prof. Djafar Khandan. After finishing the secondary school in Baku, he joins the mechanics-mathematics faculty of Azerbaijan State University (ASU) and after graduating from it he was sent to work at the Institute of Mathematics and Mechanics of the Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan. At this Institute has worked as a junior research associate, scientific secretary, senior research associate, head of department and director.

In 1964, at the Defence Council of mechanics-mathematics faculty of Azerbaijan Azerbaijan Station University he defended the candidate of degree dissertation “Some approximation properties of some operator families”.

In 1964-74, the results obtained by A.Gadjiev has played an important role in creation of direction of convergence of a sequence of linear positive operators determined in the space of continuous functions in unbounded sets and approximation by such functions. As the author of these results he has found his deserved place among the famous mathematicians of the world.

In 1982, in Moscow at the Defence Council of V.Steklov Mathematics Institute, A.Gadjiev defended doctor of science dissertation “Investigations on theory of many dimensional convolution type operators and earned the scientific degree of doctor of mathematical sciences. It should be especially noted that A.Gadjiev was the third scientist from Azerbaijan that has defended the doctor of science dissertation at Steklov Mathematics Institute of Russia.

In 1985, by the decision of Higher Certificate Commission of the USSR a tile of professor was conferred upon him, and in 1985-1989 by the decision of HCC of the USSR he was appointed a member of regional doctoral Board at Tbilisi State University.

In 1965-1992 he has given lectures at Azerbaijan State University, Azerbaijan Civil Engineers Institute, Azerbaijan Institute of Economics. In 1992-1998 he has been a professor on mathematics at Ankara University of Turkey. From 1999 to the end of his life he has been a head of the Mathematics and Mechanics chair at National Aviation Academy.

In 1989, prof. A.Gadjiev was elected a corresponding member of Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences, in 2001 the academician of Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences, from June, 2009 to the end of his life he was acad.-secretary of Physical Mathematical and Technical Sciences department. In 2002-2005 he was the chairman of the Higher Certificate Commission on “Mathematics and Mechanics” speciality, from 2005 to the end of his life the chairman of the Defence Council on mathematics and mechanics at IMM. From 2004 to 2013 he was been Director of IMM, from 2013 a Vice President of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences.

Academician Akif Gadjiev was awarded with “Labour decortion” and “Veteran of Labour” medals, and by the order of the President of Azerbaijan Republic Ilham Aliyev with “Glory” order for his contributions to Azerbaijan Science. In 2005, the honoured title “Honoured Science Worker” was conferred upon him. Academician Akif Gadjiev was awarded with Honoury diploma of the Presidium of NASA.

He is the author of over 210 scientific papers and monographs. Over 80 of them have been published abroad in authorative scientific journals. He is the author of 4 books.

Very sincere, democtaric, kind man, the scientist devoting his life to science, prof. Akif Gadjiev will always live in the hearts of those who loves him.
