An event dedicated to the 31st anniversary of the Khojaly tragedy was held with the organization of the Trade Union of the Institute of Mathematics and Mechanics of the Ministry of Science and Education Republic of Azerbaijan. First, the dear memory of the victims of the Khojaly genocide and the martyrs who died for the freedom of our land was commemorated with a minute of silence.

General Director of the Institute, Corresponding Member of ANAS, Professor Misir Mardanov gave a wide report about the Khojaly Genocide. He emphasized that the genocide and ethnic cleansing policy carried out by Armenians against us for centuries are criminal acts that serve their dream of creating a “great Armenia”. Professor Misir Mardanov said that the tragedy of Khojaly is the blood memory of the Azerbaijani people, as well as the path of struggle and freedom that has been passed for centuries. He emphasized that as a result of the Khojaly genocide, not only our citizens, but also our cities, villages, and cultural monuments were destroyed. The political and military leadership of Armenia at that time is responsible for the Khojaly Genocide.

Political scientist Tofig Abbasov, who participated in the event, spoke about the causes and bitter consequences of the Khojaly tragedy and said that those days left indelible marks in the memory of our people and will never be forgotten. On the one hand, the aim of the Armenians targeting the city of Khojaly was to eliminate the strategic obstacle in the mountainous part of Karabakh consisting of Azerbaijanis, and on the other hand, it was the goal of erasing Khojaly from the face of the earth once and for all.

The speaker emphasized that the brutal killing of the residents of the Azerbaijani city of Khojaly by the Armenian armed forces was the most terrible and bloody page of the Karabakh War. The political scientist noted that under the leadership of the President of Azerbaijan, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces Ilham Aliyev, the Azerbaijani Army carried out the “Iron Fist” counter-attack operation and freed our territories from the enemy’s occupation that lasted for 30 years in 44 days. Thanks to the iron will and unwavering determination of the Supreme Commander, as well as the unity of the people and the courage of the personnel of our glorious army, the war ended with the victory of Azerbaijan. Today, the souls of all our martyrs rest in peace.

It should be noted that on the night of February 25-26, 1992, the Armenian armed forces, with the help of armored vehicles and military personnel of the 366th motorized rifle regiment, committed genocide in the city of Khojaly, killing 63 children, 106 women, and 70 613 people, including old people, killed residents of Khojaly. For the first time, a political and legal evaluation of the events was given after the return to power of national leader Heydar Aliyev, and it was on the initiative of the Great Leader that February 26 was accepted as “Khojaly Genocide Day” in the Milli Majlis in 1994.

Speakers at the event shared their views on the historical chronology of the Khojaly genocide, the causes and consequences of the tragedy.
